Landscape Architectural Competition for Hermanninranta Waterfront Park to be launched in September

The City of Helsinki is organising an open landscape architectural competition for the Hermannin rantapuisto park. The competition will be carried out in two stages. The aim of the competition is to create an enriching and attractive Waterfront Park to Hermanninranta situated area in the eastern part of central Helsinki. The Design should enhance the regional appeal of the Vanhankaupunginlahti Natural Reserve and support the identity of North Kalasatama area.

The competition is organised in co-operation with The Finnish Association of Landscape Architects.

Competition period
Stage one: 15.9.2025 – 15.12.2025
Stage two: May 2025 toSeptember 2026 (preliminary dates)

Task

The competition task is to create a concept deeply rooted in the unique local environment and rich biodiversity, designed to endure and adapt over time. Preservation of the existing natural environment should be addressed in concept, allowing it to gradually evolve into an increasingly diverse and resilient landscape. The waterfront park design should embrace the presence of floodwater and the sea, integrating them as defining features of the area’s character. Serving both present and future inhabitants of the area, the park should offer spaces that promote well-being, recreation, and a strong connection to nature.

Competition entries should respond to the challenges of soil constructability with innovative, nature-based solutions. The goal is to identify a design that can be directly commissioned for the development of the park’s implementation plans.

Competition area

Hermanninrantapuisto park is located in the north-eastern part of central Helsinki, along the shoreline of Vanhankaupunginlahti, in the northern section of Kalasatama. The entire competition site lies on reclaimed land built over the sea.

The competition area features a naturally evolved shoreline that is periodically almost entirely submerged by floodwaters. Since the late 1980s, this former wasteland has gradually developed ruderal vegetation, transforming over time into a dynamic and self-sustaining landscape.

In the western part of the park, a terrace located between the residential blocks and the competition area creates a seamless transition from the urban fabric to the waterfront. It functions both as a pleasant recreational route and as an extension of residents’ living spaces, strengthening the connection between different parts of the area.

Participation

The Hermanninrantapuisto park competition is an open international landscape architectural competition. Entry to the first stage is possible to everyone who meet the qualification criteria defined in the competition brief. The brief will be published when the competition starts at the 15th of September, 2025. The organiser encourages deisgners and specialists to form multidiciplinary groups.

Additional information will be available in this fall.
